Exciting expansion for specialist Newport hospital

St Peter’s Hospital in Langstone, which is owned and run by specialist healthcare provider, Ludlow Street Healthcare, is a person-centred assessment, treatment and care centre for men and women with degenerative neuropsychiatric conditions and Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI). The bespoke design of St Peter’s incorporates many dementia and ABI friendly features, and the hospital has worked closely with The University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre, to create an environment that is not only innovative and therapeutic but also encourages patient proactivity. ’s success with the patients it treats is its ability to offer a more therapy-based model of care and reduce patients’ need for a primarily drug-based pharmacological approach. Dr Grzegorz Grzegorzak, Consultant Psychiatrist at St Peter’s Hospital, said: “Caring for and treating people with degenerative neuropsychiatric conditions and ABI is a very specialist area which requires expert knowledge and a lot of time.

Newport gathering of four households has far-reaching consequences

A gathering of just four households in breach of the Covid regulations had a significant impact on the lives of other people as well as those attending the family event. The circumstances came to light during contact tracing after a care home worker, who was one of those at the gathering, tested positive for Covid 19. As we move slowly into the easing of restrictions, we must continue to take care to follow all the necessary precautions to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our communities safe. Following the rules, maintaining social distancing and good hygiene procedures will help to ensure that we can protect others, particularly the most vulnerable, and do our best to avoid further tighter restrictions or even another lockdown.

Work to begin on Porthcawl’s £6.4m flood defence scheme

Preparations are underway for the start of work on a new £6.4m scheme that will defend Porthcawl from flooding and any potential future rise in sea levels. With the first phase of the scheme set to focus on the iconic Western Breakwater, construction specialists Knights Brown are in the process of setting up a compound on land at Salt Lake in readiness for the work to begin next month. As part of a second phase which will run concurrently to the first, Knights Brown will focus upon upgrading the Eastern Promenade, which was also originally built in the 1860s, and will create improved flood defences between Porthcawl Marina and Coney Beach. The new flood defence scheme follows a recent successful £3m project that replaced ageing sea defences at Town Beach and ensured that 260 homes, businesses and historic buildings such as the Grand Pavilion can continue to be protected.

Art project will celebrate Swansea’s first decade as a City of Sanctuary

Art for the Park is part of a year-long series of events to mark the tenth anniversary of Swansea as a City of Sanctuary, during which participants celebrate how people seeking sanctuary have become part of the community, bringing their skills and enthusiasm to help make Swansea the great place that it is. This project demonstrates our commitment to Swansea as a City of Sanctuary whilst celebrating 10 years since Swansea first became a City of Sanctuary. Art for the Park is another fantastic opportunity to show how people seeking sanctuary can work with other local people to produce something beautiful that really adds to the atmosphere and togetherness of our lovely city. We have already had the Council marking the anniversary with a special flower planting outside the civic offices, two beautiful banners put together from fabric panels by asylum seekers and others, which are hanging in the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, and a programme of films selected by refugees to be shown at Taliesin, including a film about City of Sanctuary made with help from the Council’s Fusion project and several others.

Aberystwyth bar issued with a Premises Closure Notice

An Aberystwyth bar has been issued a £1,000 Fixed Penalty Notice and served a Premises Closure Notice after an underground drinking den was discovered on the night of the France v Wales Six Nations rugby match. Officers from Ceredigion’s Public Protection Team were carrying out routine patrols in the county when they discovered a makeshift room set up in the cellar of Bar 46 on the evening of 20 March 2021. Officers entered the cellar using their powers under the Coronavirus restrictions regulations and found the group sitting around a table littered with drinks glasses, smoking and watching the post-match commentary on a television installed in the room. Ceredigion County Council’s Public Protection team will continue to take action against businesses who fail to comply with the Coronavirus restrictions.
