While this area doesn’t have as many sights and stops as other sections, it’s no less important for the Tammany Trace Riders. For starters, it’s where you’ll catch the Saturday afternoon Chafunkta Bike Crawl to either Old Rail Brewing Company in Mandeville OR Abita Brewing Company’s Tap Room on alternating weeks. We’ll take this open section of trail to tell you about St Tammany and how St Tammany’s Trace got its name. Kevin Davis helped broker a deal in December 1992 in which the St Tammany Parish used federal money to buy the land for $1.4 million.

It’s 18.5 miles of biking bliss through the quaint town of Ocean Springs and along the ocean. In fact, more than half of this ride is either on the bike lanes of the Biloxi Bridge, park roads in Gulf Islands National Seashore, or oceanfront in Ocean Springs. We added out and back segments over the Biloxi Bay Bridge bikeway and on the Gulf Island National Seashore park road. If you want to shorten the route, bike less (or none) of the Biloxi Bay Bridge and cut down the riding in the National Seashore Park to just an out-and-back down Boat Launch Road.

Going on a bike ride in New Orleans lets you see more of the fabulous architecture and rich history that makes the Crescent City famous while still feeling the vibrant pulse of the city and its people. Take Your Beau to the Hattiesburg Zoo I hope all you LSU fans made that rhyme in the header work… Moving on, the bronze statues at the Hattiesburg Zoo entrance tell the tragic story of Hattie the elephant and her deep friendship with a one-horned goat. Projects they support include the Giant Anteater Fund, the Jaguar SSP conservation initiative in Belize’s Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, recycling Mardi Gras beads, and saving critically endangered frogs in the Mississippi bayou. What makes the town unique is its college feel and large Millennial population (the largest per capita population in the Gulf South!) Between the length and beauty of the Longleaf Trail, the hip energy of Hattiesburg, and the warm climate of Southern Mississippi, you’ll find a year-round biking destination. The cool season lasts from December through February, with highs in the mid 60’s, but as long as the skies are clear, you should be able to find a time to ride on any given week.

No sooner than we unpacked our last moving box in Huntsville, Alabama, we began hearing news of a virus spreading around the world. The Little River Canyon Rim Parkway is 11-miles of driving bliss on a National Scenic Route. Your navigator will not take you this way if you plug in either High Falls Park or Nocalulla Falls, but you can’t pass this up if you call yourself a road tripper. You also can’t pass up a view of Alabama’s highest waterfall if you’re a waterfall chaser. Your first stop is the Little River Falls Overlook for another view of the falls and your first view of the 600′ deep Little River Canyon.

Other downcounty bikes include Mondraker F-Podium DC, Pivot Mach 4 SL, Guerrilla Gravity Trail Pistol, and Juliana Joplin / Santa Cruz Tallboy. The Podium and Mach 4 lean towards their cross country roots while the Tallboy and Trail Pistol are more rock and roll trail bikes. I looked deeper into the Top Fuel because of its blended performance and my wife’s love for her Trek female-specific hybrid.

January is wide open, but we have a week planned in February for a romantic getaway to New Orleans (and Hattiesburg and Tupelo). Two years ago, partiers circled this weekend because Mardi Gras fell on Valentine’s Day, or at least Valentines Day / President’s Day Weekend. ‘romantic travel’ is a tentative week in May for the North American Travel Journalist Association conference in Puerto Rico. That’s all the romantic getaways we have scheduled, but we’re tentatively working on a date to come back to Franklin for a full-on romantic weekend.
