History of Jubilee Tower on Moel Famau

The name literally means ‘Mother Mountain’ in Welsh, and at 554m (1818ft) it is well named as the highest summit in the Clwydian Range AONB. Sitting in the middle of the heather-clad hills of the central part of the Range,  Moel Famau offers stunning views across the Vale of Clwyd to Snowdonia and the North Wales coast. Over succeeding decades various rebuilding schemes failed for lack of money and support until 1969 when the Denbigh and Flint branch of the Country Landowners’ Association decided that their contribution to European Conservation Year 1970 would be to tidy up the ruins and secure them from further deterioration. The summit of Moel Famau is a place which is often used to mark special events  in 2010 thousands of people made the ascent to mark the bicentenary of the Jubilee Tower with an unforgettable evening of fireworks, lasers, lanterns, dancing and music.

  • 11 Can’t-Miss Experiences in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is where you’ll find the Caribbean’s only cable car, which takes visitors to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres―a whopping 2,600 feet above the rolling green hills below. The north coast of Dominican Republic is famous for producing some of the clearest and oldest amber in the world. Aside from dolphins, children and adults can enjoy a multitude of marine experiences, from shows with sea lions and nurse sharks to an exotic bird area, and snorkeling in an artificial coral reef aquarium filled with hundreds of tropical fish. No Puerto Plata trip would be complete without visiting the world-class beaches along Dominican Republic’s north coast.

  • How to handle a pandemic the Dominican Republic way

The Dominican Republic is a really good example of how governments should be handling this current Covid-19 crisis as you can clearly see through this chart the peaks and troughs of international arrivals pending on government announcements and the safety measures put in place,” says Olivier Ponti, VP of Insights at ForwardKeys. New Market Opportunities for the Caribbean Digging deeper into the data at ForwardKeys, two juicy trends emerged regarding key US cities for tourism to the Dominican Republic and more surprisingly, the growth of a new passenger type. The Dominican Republic has an advantage over some of its neighbours in the Caribbean, a strong market share in the US, not just in Europe (where sadly tougher travel conditions have been put into place). Our Plan for the Responsible Recovery of Tourism includes, amongst other features, full medical and traveller free insurance against COVID-19 and other illnesses for our tourists, rigorous implementation of internationally approved protocols, and the most active policies to preserve the health of our people and our visitors.” Meanwhile, David Collado, Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic commented: “

    Our Community Miles

Following last week’s blog about Offa’s Dyke 50th birthday we thought it would be good to highlight some of the shorter walking routes within North East Wales as current restrictions only allow walking from home right now. A three mile circular walk from Tremeirchion, that links into the Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail whilst taking in the wide panoramas of the Vale of Clwyd. A 5.8 mile circular walk from the village of Graigfechan, which links to Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail and takes in views of the Vale of Clwyd and beyond. A choice of interesting circular routes, which take in the Vale of Clwyd, Moel Famau Country Park and Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail.

    Offa’s Dyke Path- 50 years

The Offa’s Dyke path which is named after, the spectacular Dyke King Offa ordered to be constructed in the 8th century, probably to divide his Kingdom of Mercia from rival kingdoms in what is now Wales. As well as Offa’s Dyke itself, the route passes through or by countless other heritage sites, such as Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey, Monnow Bridge, White Castle, Beacon Ring, Dinas Bran and numerous hillforts in the Clwydian Range the largest being Penycloddiau A lot of people are combining the Wales Coastal Path and Offa’s Dyke path to walk the whole of wales. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the work of creating and completing the route involved a pioneering partnership effort by government agencies, local authorities and the volunteers of the then newly formed Offa’s Dyke Association.
