This was one of my favourite spots on the W Trek. Sadly all the dead trees are a reminder of the forest fire 🔥 from 2011. It destroyed massive parts of the paine and has left this area of the park with the nickname “the scar”. I read the fire was started when a tourist set their toilet paper on fire to dispose of it - even though there are many signs in the park for no fires. Always remember to leave no trace behind. Spending time outside, connecting with such a beautiful place, reminded me that even though nature is powerful and could end me with a single gust of wind, it’s also incredible fragile. Seeing the burnt trees from forest fires, the tissue paper on the ground and sadly the receding glaciers are all reminders of this. So I’ll continue to do my best to explore responsibly. A lone guanaco just outside of El Chaltén. Naturally the guanaco are quite skittish (never know when there’s a puma looming nearby).
