  • How to Implement Lasagna Gardening This Year

The Lasagna Gardening Method is a gardening style where you layer organic materials and do not till or dig and give the bed time to break down into fluffy, rich soil full of nutrients and less weeds. A lasagna garden bed is essentially a lot of layers: thick brown materials, thinner green materials, soil, and straw, with a bottom of cardboard or newspapers to keep the weeds from growing. I would recommend putting wood chips down on walkways between your beds to help keep weeds away, the walkways from becoming compacted and an additional nutrient source to add to the top of your bed come spring when you add fresh mulch to the walkways. It’s best time to start your lasagna beds is in the fall when leaves and other dried brown materials are plentiful, but you can start them anytime you want.

  • How to Grow Corn in Your Backyard Garden Homestead

If you’d like to grow corn too, here are tips that will help you maximize your harvest, regardless of the type of corn you grow. Popcorn takes longer to germinate than sweet corn, and most varieties require 90-120 days to grow. Favorite sweet corn varieties in Iowa include Peaches and Cream, Buttergold Sweet, and True Gold Sweet Corn. Sweet corn will be harvested first and you’ll want to harvest sweet corn at exactly the right time.

  • How to Create a Rainbow with Natural Easter Egg Dyes

The first way is to dye a white egg blue, then dye it yellow to get fun shades of green. The second way to get a greenish color naturally is to dye a brown egg blue. Aside from yellow, I think blue eggs are the easiest to get using natural egg dyes. If you’re really interested in natural dyes, I highly recommend Janet Garman’s workbook Natural Dyes on Wool.

  • How to Make the Perfect Crustless Keto Quiche

Duck eggs, chicken eggs, guinea eggs, goose eggs = all the eggs! We eat German Pancakes, bacon-wrapped egg muffins, frittatas, boiled eggs when we want a traditional German Breakfast at home. If you’re trying to find an easy low-carb meal that uses a lot of eggs, a crustless quiche is a great option. Pick a protein if you want, decide on a couple of veg options, pick a cheese, gather cream and eggs, and get busy.

  • Benefits & Drawbacks of Raising Guinea Fowl on the Homestead

After starting with several keets, we have now hatched guinea keets in our incubator, watched a duck hatch and raise guinea keets along with a bunch of ducklings, and had adult guineas hatch and raise their own young as well. Because there are a few things you do need to be aware of before adding guineas to your homestead… Native to Africa, guinea fowl come in a lot of different colors. On our little farm, we have a white male guinea named Avalanche, a lavender guinea hen named Cashew, and a bunch of unnamed pied guineas that were all hatched from guinea eggs laid by Cashew. One of my favorite things about raising guinea fowl is finding their pretty spotted feathers are the reason I first became interested in guinea fowl.

Classic Homemade Spaghetti and Meatballs Recipe

Meatballs do add work, but when they simmer in a sauce for an hour or more, they add such a rich depth to the recipe. Heat olive oil in a large pot and then add and then add onions, carrots, green peppers and saute for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. You can use any meatball recipe you like, or if you prefer to buy pre-made meatballs, that works too. With lots of spinach, eggs, bread crumbs, mozzarella cheese, and ground beef, this meatloaf recipe is a family favorite and this particular meat mixture makes fabulous meatballs too.

    How to Grow Brussel Sprouts

How & When to Plant Brussel Sprouts Brussel sprouts are best as a fall crop with a long growing season that starts 6 months before your first fall frost. Since Brussel sprouts are best as a fall crop, it’s best to start the seeds indoors in early May for planting in the garden by mid-June. Red Bull Brussel Sprouts – impress everyone with this deep red brussel sprout heirloom with milder tasting sprouts than their green counterparts. And in fact, brussel sprouts taste better when they’re harvested after the first frost, which is why we recommend to count backwards from your first frost, and then use days to maturity, to determine planting date.
