Getting enough sleep at night can help you to not only rid your body of excess stress but can help your body to heal from sicknesses and other ailments. When you create a bedtime routine, such as choosing to stay away from social media or any digital devices in the hours leading up to sleep, this can help you to get the sleep you need on days when work stress is keeping you awake at night. The little daily or weekly activities that help you unwind or focus on yourself for even a few short hours can help lower levels of stress. Audra has been working on this project for the past three years that promotes women as superheroes and shares their stories of turning pain into power. Initially the name was going to be SHEroes, but one day in explaining the project to others, they misheard me and thought I was saying She Rose. I want to empower each woman that participates in She Rose and each woman that sees the project. Every day we hear stories of horror and stories of success but very rarely do we hear stories of turning pain into power and struggles into strength.

With the news of a record number of women leaving the workforce due to demands of childcare and house management still falling on our shoulders, there clearly needs to be an overhaul of the way our support systems and associated policies impact those hardest hit by the pandemic financially. When thinking about personal finances, women are more likely to feel overwhelmed (38%) and anxious (37%) while men are most likely to feel knowledgeable (38%), confident and in control (37%) In early March of this year, Fidelity Investments conducted a new survey and found that since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, women continue to report historic levels of stress surrounding their finances, job security and long-term savings. Women are also seeking more financial guidance than ever before and 7-in-10 women expressed a desire to become more hands-on with their finances and take action, led by millennial, Latina (83%) and Black (76%) women.

So what better way to celebrate the everyday heroes among us than amplifying the work of Black Women who are not only creating history as we speak, but whose work will undoubtedly impact many in their communities and beyond. One such hero is Alex Williams – an Oakland-based founder who is working to dismantle the racial and financial barriers to holistic healthcare access through her company Holistic Hyperbarics. Having spent her professional life focused on health and wellness, Alex brings a unique combination of medical skills and exceptional customer service to Holistic Hyperbarics. Since 1997, women-owned businesses grew by 114%, while Native women-owned businesses grew by 201%. In 2020, Native Americans/Alaskan Natives owned 1.4% of all women-owned businesses (an estimated 161,500), employing 61,300 workers and generating $11 billion in revenues. In the summer of 2021, the Challenge will grant three $10 million awards, with an additional $10 million to be allocated among finalists, bringing the total to $40 million. Black women represent 42% of new women-owned businesses—three times their share of the female population—and 36% of all Black-owned employer businesses.

I’m a middle school student in New Jersey and, for me, those four letters represent my future. I immediately joined my school’s STEM club, expecting the room to be overflowing with curious young minds. My attempts to bring a few peers into the club ultimately failed, with several of them shocked that I would want to spend hours sitting in a room looking at math problems. So teachers, please, consider applying STEAM ideas in your classrooms, so that more girls like me have the opportunity to benefit from them, and, ultimately, so we can better prepare ourselves for the world outside of the classroom.

WBENC Certification validates that the women-owned businesses are 51% owned, managed, and considered operational by women. According to Fundera.com, the United States has around 12.3 million women-owned businesses generating almost 1.8 trillion dollars a year. Sharon Chuter, a Nigerian, has founded Uoma Beauty company which creates a makeup range for forwarding thinking, radical, and compromising women. This product went viral publicly through 30 minutes of television infomercials, and now it is a top-selling and leading acne medication brand in the United States stock market.

Especially now with the impact of COVID-19 laying bare the systemic inequalities that exist for mothers and women, there is a need to completely reset the cultural narrative when it comes to expectations placed on motherhood, and how mothers empower themselves beyond the narrow status quo. Dying To Be a Good Mother’, released on International Women’s Day for a timely conversation, Heather doesn’t hold back with details about becoming a single teen mom at 18, living in poverty, starting a business from scratch after eventually having two more kids, being diagnosed with a late stage cancer and realizing that the way she was living her life nearly led her directly to death’s door. It was released on March 8, International Women’s Day, and given the focus on how COVID has impacted mothers especially, why was it important for you to share your story now? It logically doesn’t make sense to ‘kill’ off parts of yourself to meet other people’s expectations of who they think you should be (your needs/dreams/desires etc…).

In France, Tran To Nga is suing the American chemical industry for poisoning her in Vietnam – a lawsuit she filed in 2014 against the corporations that produced and sold the dioxin-contaminated Agent Orange. Tran To Nga, visiting an Agent Orange victims’ clinic in Vietnam, states that these children are the fourth generation of children in Vietnam still being born with deformities and need special care. There was a small settlement in the Vets’ lawsuit against the chemical companies in 1984, and an “Agent Orange Act” passed by the elder President George H. W. Bush in 1991, but brown water navy vets fought for years to get some kind of benefits for the damages to their health while exposed to Agent Orange, and were only recognized very recently.
